Arsenal to step-up pursuit of £40m star after suffering major fresh injury blow
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are targetting a new centre-back in January with Calum Chambers set to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
Chambers limped out of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea after falling awkwardly midway through the first half and Mikel Arteta admitted after the game he was concerned it could be a serious issue.
Those fears have now been realised as the Daily Mail are one of several outlets reporting today that Chambers is set to miss the rest of the season after tests on Monday indicated damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.
If confirmed, it would be a huge blow to Arsenal as Chambers has probably been our most consistent defender this season and his absence will leave us short of options at the back during the second half of the campaign.
Sokratis, Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin, Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney have all spent time on the sidelines with various injury problems this season and Arteta is already having to play teenage winger Bukayo Saka as cover at left-back.
Central defence has been a huge problem area for Arsenal for some time and we really don’t want to be relying on Shkodran Mustafi more than we have to so it’s good to hear the Daily Mail claim we’re targetting a new centre-back in January.
The newspaper says Arsenal bosses will back Arteta with funds next month and will step-up their pursuit of Dayot Upamecano – who’s a prime target after impressing for RB Leipzig once again this season.
The Mail says Arsenal have already done much of the groundwork to secure a deal and Leipzig could cash-in at £40m in January as Upamecano has just 18 months left to run on his contract.
The 21-year-old would be a superb signing if we could pull it off but several other top clubs are also being linked so there is a long way to go before we can start getting too excited.
