Arsenal confirm major injury blow, star ruled out for up to 9 months following surgery

Arsenal have confirmed a major injury blow as Calum Chambers has been ruled out for up to nine months following knee surgery.

Chambers limped out of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea after falling awkwardly in the first half and Mikel Arteta admitted after the game he feared the defender had suffered a serious injury.

Widespread reports earlier this week suggested that Chambers had damaged his anterior cruciate ligament but Arteta refused to put a time-scale on his recovery until a proper diagnosis was conducted.

Arsenal have now provided an official update to confirm Chambers has undergone successful surgery to repair a ruptured ACL and his rehabilitation is expected to take between six and nine months.

Further to the injury sustained during the match against Chelsea on Sunday, we can confirm that Calum ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. Calum has had successful surgery in London on Thursday morning. The rehabilitation process is expected to take between six to nine months. Everyone at the club will be supporting Calum to ensure he is back on the pitch as soon as possible.

This is a cruel blow as Chambers has been our most consistent defender this season and was finally taking his chance to claim a regular first team place after a few frustrating years on the fringes of things.

His absence leaves us short at the back as Kieran Tierney is out until March while Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding have also been on the sidelines recently with hamstring and knee injuries.

Arteta admitted at his press conference earlier today that the Chambers injury will force him to dip into the transfer market this month but the Arsenal boss concedes it won’t be easy to bring in another top class centre-back.

Dayot Upamecano has been strongly linked after impressing in Germany and he has just 18 months left on his contract but a deal won’t be easy as RB Leipzig will drive a hard bargain to sell the 21-year-old mid-season.
