Arsenal eyeing move for Swiss star as Arteta plots triple summer swoop
Arsenal are plotting a move to sign Basel centre-back Eray Comert as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad with at least three new additions this summer, according to reports.
Defence has once again been a weak point at Arsenal this season so it’s no wonder the boss is wanting to bring in some new central defenders and the Express are carrying a report claiming Comert has emerged as a target.
The 22-year-old has impressed at the Swiss giants in recent years and the newspaper says his performances have alerted Arsenal with Arteta ready to do-battle with Galatasaray over his signature.
Comert is under contract until 2022 and is a Swiss international but he’d be a much cheaper alternative to Dayot Upamecano with the £40m+ rated RB Leipzig star attracting interest from several top European clubs.
The Express says Arteta wants to sign two centre-backs and is also expected to turn Pablo Mari’s loan move into a permanent one this summer with a deal worth in the region of £10m likely to be finalised with Flamengo.
Money is going to be tight at the Emirates so to help finance the deals for Mari and Comert, the report says Arsenal will look to sell Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis as Arteta looks to freshen up his defensive options.
The boss is also being tipped to strengthen in midfield and the Express claims Arsenal are targeting a big-money move for Thomas Partey – who could cost around £40m – which would explain why we’re looking at bargain moves in defence for the likes of Comert and Mari.
It’s been a disastrous season at Arsenal and while football is expected to return at some point next month, we have very little left to play for as we’re ninth in the table – eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea – and we’ve already been knocked out of Europe.
We are in to the quarter finals of the FA Cup and those using free bet offers may back Arsenal to lift the trophy but you’d have to be a die-hard fan to put any real money down on us. Man City are the heavy favourites followed by Chelsea and Man Utd with Arsenal a distant 9/1 fourth favourites to go all the way in the FA Cup this season.
Therefore, Arteta should be focusing on next season and it’s good to hear he’s looking to bring in a couple of centre-backs and a defensive midfielder as those are certainly areas we need to strengthen this summer.
Partey would be a fantastic signing if we could get a deal agreed with Atletico Madrid as he’d improve our options in midfield and be an upgrade on the likes of Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torriera in the middle of the park.
Mari impressed in the two games he played before the season came to a halt so he could be a solid addition in defence but I must admit I haven’t seen much of Comert so will have to reserve judgement until I see him in the flesh – if he ends up joining Arsenal.
