Arsenal’s attempts to sign key target boosted as Arteta eyes fresh offer
According to reports in Spain via TeamTalk, Arsenal’s chances of signing Thomas Partey have been boosted as Mikel Arteta prepares to offer Atletico Madrid Lucas Torreira in exchange for the midfielder.
Arteta is desperately trying to overhaul his midfield during the closing weeks of the transfer window as it’s been an area of concern for some time and Partey has been widely touted as his prime target.
Arsenal have reportedly been in talks with Atletico trying to get a deal agreed but, as per TeamTalk, the La Liga club have so far refused to do business unless we meet Partey’s release clause – which is set at around £45m.
Arteta is working from a tight budget so Arsenal chiefs are reluctant to trigger Partey’s clause and there were rumours recently that the midfielder could yet sign a new double-your-money contract in Madrid.
However, Arsenal’s chances of landing the Ghanaian international have been boosted as Marca claims that the 27-year-old has turned down Atletico’s latest offer of an extension because he’s keen to secure a move to the Premier League.
The Spanish outlet says Atletico boss Diego Simeone has already lined-up Marc Roca as a replacement and will formalise their interest in the Espanyol midfielder once Partey secures his move to Arsenal.
We still have to agree a deal with the Spanish side and TeamTalk are citing a report from the paper version of OkDiario that says Arteta is set to launch a fresh offer that would see us use Torreira as bait to land Partey.
The report says Atletico have already turned down proposals that would have included Matteo Guendouzi and Alexandre Lacazette in an exchange deal but Arsenal may have better luck using Torreira as the La Liga side were after him a couple of years ago.
Torreira is expected to leave the Emirates this summer after struggling to hold down a regular place under Arteta so it would make sense if we could include him in any deal for Partey. Plus, it would give Atletico an immediate replacement.
Let’s hope we can finally get something agreed as we badly need to improve in midfield and Partey would be a terrific signing for Arsenal.
