Arsenal linked with surprise late swoop to sign £9m Frenchman
According to The Telegraph via Football London, Arsenal are being linked with a shock late swoop to sign Thomas Lemar on loan from Atletico Madrid.
We’ve been desperately trying to bring in at least one midfielder during the closing weeks of the transfer window and Arsenal have been strongly linked with Atletico star Thomas Partey.
That move looks dead in the water as Arsenal are unable to meet the player’s £45m release clause, however, we could still end up buying a ‘Thomas’ from Atletico Madrid, if reports are to be believed.
Football London are citing a report from the Telegraph that claims Arsenal are ‘clear to sign Lemar’ after Atletico made it clear the winger can leave on loan before the window closes at 11pm.
The newspaper says Lemar is already in talks with an unnamed Premier League club about a transfer and it’s suggested that Arsenal could be a possible destination for the Frenchman.
The Sun reported over the weekend that Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig had withdrawn their interest in the 24-year-old after Atletico demanded a £9m loan fee. Coupled with £6m in wages, the one-year loan would cost around £15m.
That seems excessive for a player who’s endured a nightmare since joining Atletico and I really don’t see Arsenal splashing out on a winger when we desperately need a central midfielder.
There is no real substance to these reports linking Arsenal with Lemar and I think our name has just been included because we were after him a couple of years ago when he left Monaco for Madrid.
We can keep an eye on this one but I personally don’t see anything happening with regards to Lemar joining Arsenal today.
Hopefully the club are focussing their efforts on signing a midfielder as we desperately need to bring in at least one before the window closes.
