Arsenal on verge of signing 22-year-old star after Edu negotiates deal
According to reports, Arsenal are closing-in on a deal to sign Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid after Edu initiated talks with the Spaniards last week.
Mikel Arteta is looking to bring in another midfield playmaker this month to help ease the load on Emile Smith Rowe. The youngster has done superbly well in recent weeks but we still need another creative player during the second half of the season.
Odegaard has emerged as a top target with Sky Sports breaking the news yesterday that Arsenal had made an approach to Real Madrid offering to take the 22-year-old on loan for the rest of the season.
The Athletic followed that up by reporting that Edu opened talks with Madrid last week and has been trying to thrash out a deal, but Arsenal were battling it out with Real Sociedad – where the player spent last season on loan.
However, it appears Arsenal have now moved into pole position to secure a deal as Spanish outlet Sport claims today that Odegaard is just ‘one step away’ from joining the Gunners for the rest of the season.
The Norwegian international wants to leave the Bernabeu in search of regular first team football having struggling to hold down a place in Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven and it looks like Arteta has offered it to him.
Sport suggests that Odegaard is on the verge of joining Arsenal as they say his ‘flight to London is about to take off’ so it looks like he could be about to follow in the footsteps of Madrid team mate Dani Ceballos by sealing a loan move to the Emirates.
Odegaard would be an excellent addition to Arteta’s squad if we can get this deal over the line. He was outstanding during his time at Sociedad where he provided seven goals and 7 assists in his 36 appearances and he forged a reputation as one of the best young playmakers in Europe last season.
He’s not been able to force his way into Zidane’s team this campaign but I think he’d still be a terrific signing for Arsenal. I just hope we have an option to buy clause in any deal as a simple 6-month loan would be pretty pointless.
