Arteta confirms injury blow – Arsenal star ruled out of Sheffield United trip
Mikel Arteta has confirmed an injury blow after ruling Martin Odegaard out of Arsenal’s trip to Sheffield United this weekend.
Odegaard missed last night’s hugely frustrating 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague at the Emirates Stadium in the quarter finals of the Europa League due to an ankle injury.
The midfielder initially picked up the issue while away with Norway during the international break last month and aggravated the injury during Arsenal’s defeat to Liverpool last weekend.
It was hoped Odegaard may make a swift return to action, however, it appears the injury is slightly worse than first thought as Arteta has now ruled the on-loan Real Madrid man out of our next couple of games.
Speaking after the draw with Slavia Prague last night, Arteta told reporters:
“We don’t know. He wasn’t able to play today and he will be out, I think, for the next game or two. But we don’t know yet.”
We’ll have to wait and see exactly how long Odegaard is out for but it looks like he’ll miss Sunday’s trip to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United as well as the crucial return leg against Slavia Prague next week.
The news will be a blow as Odegaard has been in fine form lately and I think Arsenal missed his link-up play last night. Let’s hope he makes a quick recovery and is back playing again soon.
Kieran Tierney will also be missing for the foreseeable future after being ruled out for up to six weeks with a knee injury while David Luiz is also out following a minor knee operation.
Otherwise, Arsenal have no other injury concerns and I hope Arteta makes some changes against Sheffield United as last night’s performance was inexcusable.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli should all be pushing for recalls on Sunday after making an impact off the bench.
