Reports: Arsenal set to table offer as Arteta targets double swoop for £70m duo

It’s been another busy day of transfer rumours involving Arsenal as the club have linked with moves for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Here’s the latest…

Arsenal favourites for Abraham

An interesting report in The Sun as they claim Arsenal are ‘set to sign’ striker Tammy Abraham from Chelsea on an initial season-long loan deal after fending off competition from Tottenham and West Ham.

Abraham has fallen out-of-favour under Thomas Tuchel as he made just two Premier League appearances since the German coaches arrival in late January so it’s no surprise he’s being linked with a move this summer.

Chelsea want to sell the 23-year-old to raise money to help fund a move for a marquee striker but The Sun says suitors aren’t prepared to meet their £40m asking price this summer due to the current financial climate.

Therefore, the newspaper says Chelsea are ready to let Abraham leave on loan to get his £80,000-a-week wages off their books. According to The Sun, Arsenal are set to win the race for his signature and sign Abraham on loan with an obligation to buy for £40m next summer should the striker reach a set amount of appearances.

I’m torn over this report. On the one hand, I don’t really want Arsenal to sign any more Chelsea rejects. However, Abraham is the sort of profile of player we should be targeting and we could certainly do with a ‘plan B’ striker.

Chelsea have a long history of selling players only for them to go on to become top class stars at other clubs [think Salah, De Bruyne, Lukaku, etc] so let’s hope Abraham is added to the list if Arsenal do end up buying him.

Ramsdale offer

Next up and according to talkSPORT Arsenal are set to table an improved offer worth up to £30m for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Mikel Arteta is in the market for another goalkeeper this summer after Mat Ryan left the club following his loan spell. Bernd Leno’s future is also in doubt as he has two years left on his contract and is reportedly not planning to sign an extension.

So it appears Arsenal are looking to sign a top class keeper who can either replace Leno this summer if he’s sold or provide him with stiff competition next season before the German leaves in 12 months time.

We’ve been linked with a number of keepers recently but Ramsdale has emerged as a serious target and talkSPORT says Arsenal are set to submit an improved offer after seeing two previous bids rejected.

The report claims Ramsdale is now Arteta’s No.1 target ahead of Sam Johnstone and our fresh offer will be worth up to £30m. If accurate, I think this is a HUGE amount of money to pay for Ramsdale as I wasn’t impressed with him last season.

Not only that, but paying £30m for Ramsdale after selling Emi Martinez for £20m last summer would be shocking business by Arsenal. Serious questions should be asked about the Martinez sale as it’s turned out to be one of our worst decisions in recent years.

The good thing about Ramsdale is he’s only 23 so has plenty of time to improve and he’s excellent with his feet – something Arteta is reportedly looking for. My worry is his shot stopping was poor for Sheffield United last season.

So based on these two reports, Arsenal are targeting two moves that could cost us around £70m in the end. Personally, I think we could get a lot better value elsewhere for that type of money. Particularly as we should be spending the big bucks on a No.10 and a central midfielder.
