Liverpool vs Arsenal preview, team news, line-ups, prediction
Arsenal get back to Premier League action when we take on Liverpool in a titanic clash at Anfield this evening, 5.30pm kick-off.
The international break came at a bad time for Arsenal as we were in terrific form having extended our unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions with a 1-0 win over Watford two weeks ago.
I’m sure Mikel Arteta could have done without the interruption of international football in order to keep the momentum going and have the entire squad together in the week leading up to a difficult trip to Anfield.
However, the players can have no excuses tonight as this is a big opportunity for the Arsenal team to make a statement and show we’re ready to push for a top four place again following a disappointing few years.
We head to Merseyside sitting fifth in the Premier League table and just two points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool so we can leapfrog Jurgen Klopp’s men with a win this evening.
Obviously Liverpool are a formidable side on home soil but they come into the match off the back of a 3-2 defeat to West Ham so Arteta may be quietly confident of picking up a positive result.
Team news
Arsenal will assess Thomas Partey but the midfielder is expected to be passed fit to return having overcome a groin injury that kept him out of the Watford game before the international break.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also likely to start despite coming home early from duty with Gabon due to a minor knock while Martin Odegaard is pushing for a recall this evening.
However, Arsenal will continue to be without Granit Xhaka as he’s still recovering from a serious knee injury while Sead Kolasinac is facing a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury picked up while away with Bosnia.
Liverpool have injury concerns of their own as Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Joe Gomez are all missing while Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones remain out with long-term issues.
The hosts have received a boost as Sadio Mane is fit after overcoming a rib injury while Jordan Henderson and Andrew Robertson are expected to feature after recovering from knocks.
Expected line-ups
Expected Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Salah, Mane, Jota
Predicted score
Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal: We’ve struggled on recent visits to Anfield and Liverpool remain a tough side to beat on the road, however, call me mad but I’m quietly confident we can get something from this game. Liverpool aren’t as solid as they once were and seem to be heavily reliant on Salah this season so if we can contain the Egyptian, I think we have a chance of getting a draw. Which would be a terrific result.
