Confirmed: Arsenal announce surprise signing of 23-year-old defender Auston Trusty
It might not be the signing Arsenal fans have been hoping for but the club have announced we’ve completed a deadline deal for Colorado Rapids defender Auston Trusty.
Mikel Arteta is desperately trying to strengthen his squad before the window shuts at 11pm but we’ve so far been frustrated in our attempts to bring in any significant new recruits.
However, it seems Arsenal chiefs have still had time to do a deal for Trusty as the club surprised fans with an announcement on Arsenal.com this evening confirming the 23-year-old has been signed from Colorado Rapids – who are also owned by KSE.
Trusty will remain with the MLS side for the remainder of the season before linking up with Arsenal in the summer but unfortunately it seems Trusty isn’t ready for the first team squad just yet.
Arsenal have confirmed that after arriving at the end of the season, the centre-back will be immediately loaned to a European club in the summer to help progress his development.
Who is Trusty?
I have to admit I know very little about Trusty but from what I’ve read, he’s a left-footed centre-back who joined the Rapids from Philadelphia Union in November 2019.
He’s made 41 appearances for the MLS franchise, helping them finish top of the Western Conference last year, and has been capped by the United States at U19 and U20 level.
Sadly this isn’t a deal that’s going to help Arteta’s first team any time soon. It looks like this transfer has more to do with building our relationship with the Colorado Rapids at the request of owner KSE.
Arsenal already have a close ties with the Rapids – for obvious reasons – and it looks like Kroenke wants to build that relationship further by using us to help players transition from the US to Europe.
Let’s pray this isn’t the only signing announcement the club make tonight, otherwise is could be a very difficult second of the season.
