Romano: Arsenal complete deal to sign Marquinhos
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have completed a deal with Sao Paulo worth around £3m to sign highly-rated attacker Marquinhos.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is expected to bring in a number of new signings this summer after Arsenal secured their place in the Europa League next season. We missed out on the Champions League but we’re still going to need a much bigger squad to cope with the extra Europa fixtures.
Attack is an area of concern as we already looked short last season and we’ve now lost Alexandre Lacazette – who’s joined Lyon on a free transfer. Eddie Nketiah is yet to sign a new contract and Nicolas Pepe is being tipped for a move so Arsenal are going to need to bring in attacking reinforcements.
We’ve been strongly linked with Gabriel Jesus as Arteta looks to bring in a new first choice striker, however, the boss is also needing to sign squad players and Marquinhos emerged as a prime target last month.
Goal claimed in mid-May that the Brazilian winger was in London to undergo his medical after a £3m deal was agreed with Sao Paulo. The deal was then held up after Wolves claimed Marquinhos had agreed to join them, and it looked like a drawn-out law suit could ensue.
However, it appears things have now been resolved as renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the deal taking the 19-year-old to Arsenal has finally been signed. Romano says Marquinhos has agreed terms over a five-year contract and is set to be formally announced as an Arsenal player.

Arteta has predominantly signed young players under 23 over the past year so it’s no surprise to see him targeting another exciting youngster in Marquinhos. The teenage winger has developed into one of the most highly-rated attackers in Brazilian football since breaking into the Sao Paulo first team last year.
A left-footed winger who likes to operate from the right, he is likely to be viewed as a replacement for Pepe. Marquinhos is expected to be given the chance to impress in pre-season with the aim of keeping him in the first team squad if he does well.
Obviously he won’t [hopefully] be the last attacker Arsenal sign this summer and he won’t solve our problems up front, but it’s good to see the club investing in young talent again,
Fingers crossed Marquinhos can have a similar impact to Gabriel Martinelli.
