Arsenal agree shock £34m deal to sign Fabio Vieira
Arsenal are set to sign Fabio Vieira after agreeing a deal with Porto for the attacking midfielder worth up to £34m [€40m], according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
Mikel Arteta is in the market for a new striker and a central midfielder with Gabriel Jesus and Youri Tielemans strongly linked over the past few weeks.
However, Ornstein dropped a surprise today after reporting that Arsenal are set to sign an attacking midfielder having agreed a deal with Porto for Fabio Vieira.
According to The Athletic journalist, Arsenal will pay an initial £30m [€35m] with a further £4m [€5m] in add-ons meaning the deal could reach £34m. Vieira is flying to London tonight to undergo his medical in north London on Friday before signing a five-year contract.
Ornstein says Arteta has been the one pushing the club to secure Vieira’s signature, so he clearly feels we need to add more creativity to the squad despite already having two creative midfielders in Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe.
Vieira is predominantly a central attacking midfielder, so occupies the same areas as Odegaard and ESR. The 22-year-old can play as a No.8 or as a false 9 as well, so he will give us some options, and it will be interesting to see how the boss integrates him into the starting eleven.
The Portuguese U21 international played 39 games in all competitions for Porto last season, providing 7 goals and 16 assists, so he’ll certainly bring an added threat in the final third.
I must admit this deal has come as a shock as I never considered Arsenal would splash out £34m on another attacking midfielder. Especially as we desperately need at least one striker and an upgrade on Granit Xhaka this summer.
However, as long as we also fill those positions, I’m delighted with the signing of Vieira. He’s one of the best young creative players in Europe and should be an excellent long-term addition for Arsenal.
He’ll become our second signing of the summer following the arrival of 19-year-old Brazilian winger Marquinhos.
