Douglas Luiz

Arsenal target Douglas Luiz is reportedly ready to leave Aston Villa as a free agent at the end of this season, as per the transfer journalist Ekrem Konur.

The Gunners were exploring the possibility of strengthening their midfield throughout the recently concluded transfer window. Mikel Arteta’s side made a last-ditch attempt to sign the 24-years-old on deadline day, however, despite putting their best efforts to get this deal over the line, a deal didn’t materialise.

Meanwhile, writing on CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano has stated that Arsenal could reignite their interest in signing Luiz in the winter transfer window, but waiting until the end of this season would be a better decision due to the fact that the midfielder’s current contract with the Villans will expire at the end of this season.

Writing on Twitter, transfer journalist Ekrem Konur has claimed that the Brazil international is planning to leave Villa Park after this season as a free agent. Therefore, it appears that the 24-years-old doesn’t have any intention of extending his contract with Aston Villa.

Konur said:

“Douglas Luiz, 24, plans to leave Aston Villa as a free agent at the end of the season.”

Will Douglas Luiz join Arsenal?

If Douglas Luiz has decided to leave Steven Gerrard’s side as a free agent at the end of this season then the west Midlands club might be desperate to cash in on their star man in January, which will allow Arsenal to sign the Brazilian for a cut-price fee in the winter transfer window.

Signing the South American for free would be a better outcome for the Gunners in terms of business perspective. However, Arteta needs more depth in his squad, especially in the middle of the park, and therefore, the club’s hierarchy should purchase a new midfielder in January.

Luiz would be a feasible option for the north London club in order to strengthen their engine room. The Villa man can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and also can deliver excellent crosses from the set-pieces. So, the South American would be a very good addition to Arteta’s squad, if he were to join the club.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what Arsenal will decide to do about their midfield department in the January transfer window. They lack options in the middle of the park and signing a new midfielder would be a shrewd decision by the club’s hierarchy.
