Arsenal Face Fresh Blow As Italians Eye £26m Higuain Deal
According to reports today, Arsenal are facing fresh competition for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain with cash-rich Italian outfit Napoli the latest club to express their interest.
Last night we brought you news that Chelsea had contacted Madrid to enquire over the Argentinean hitman and now it seems we’ll have to fight off interest from Napoli as well.
The Serie A outfit are on the look-out for a new striker to replace PSG-bound Edinson Cavani and according to the Express newspaper, they are willing to use £26m of the £55m they received from the French club to land Higuain from under our noses.
That figure is closer to Madrid’s valuation of the player and trumps the £23m we’ve supposedly offered so far, and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is understood to be willing to pay the 25-year-old wages of £70,000-a-week to make the switch to Italy.
We were close to securing a deal for Higuain last week after the striker was given permission to agree personal terms with Arsenal. However, with the move on the verge of being completed, the deal stalled after Madrid decided to demand a higher transfer fee and Arsene Wenger opted to switch his attention to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
It remains to be seen whether Napoli’s reported interest will push us into renewing negotiations with Madrid, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue with our pursuit of Suarez as the Spaniard’s dirty tactics are likely to have riled Wenger.
Personally, I hope we do go back in for Higuain as I fear Liverpool aren’t going to sanction the sale of Suarez to us, and I’d be gutted to see us miss out on both strikers. Hopefully we can get one of the deals done thought as either Higuain or Suarez would make a real impact on the first team next season.
