Arsenal preparing to strengthen two major areas in January
Arsenal are reportedly keen on adding more firepower to their squad in the January transfer window, as per the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Despite making five major acquisitions and investing around £120m in the last transfer window, the Gunners seemingly aren’t going to restrict their transfer business in January and are ready to spend again.
A report emerged last week that said Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke is prepared to splash the cash if Mikel Arteta opts to sign more players in the winter.
And now writing on CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano has stated that after missing out on adding more options to their midfield and the wings in this summer window, strengthening these two areas is still on the agenda for Arsenal.
The journalist further claims that the north London club will be ready to pounce on any opportunities to bolster the middle of the park and the flanks in January and Youri Tielemans would be a perfect option for the Gunners’ engine room.
Romano also says that Mikel Arteta’s side ‘will go step by step’ to improve their squad and have now been preparing to tie their star players down into a new long-term contract along with planning the future transfer businesses.
Arsenal want to strengthen two major areas in January
Romano said:
“Arsenal have always been optimistic for this season, but not expecting to be top of the league and four points clear in October. They will keep going step by step, game by game with the aim to improve the whole project with new contracts, new players in the future and more.
“They will be ready in case there will be good opportunities; midfielder and winger were two possibilities considered in the summer and still in the potential plans, but it depends on the players. I think Arsenal need at least one more midfielder to help Arteta’s rotation, I’d have loved to see Youri Tielemans there.”
Arsenal lack options in their midfield department as well as the wide areas and therefore, strengthening these two areas in the winter will be vital for Arteta.
The north London club made a last-ditch attempt to sign Douglas Luiz on deadline day last summer but failed to persuade Aston Villa to sell their star. It appeared the Brazilian might have been their priority target to strengthen the middle of the park in January, given his contract was about to end at the end of this season. However, the midfielder has recently signed a new long-term contract with the Villans.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see who would be Arsenal’s preferred options to bolster their midfield as well as the flanks in January. Adding more depth to the squad will help Arteta in achieving success during the second half of the season.
