Arsenal waiting in the wings to sign Matheus Cunha
Arsenal are reportedly showing interest in signing Atlético Madrid star Matheus Cunha in the upcoming January transfer window, as per the transfer insider Dean Jones.
The Gunners were seemingly planning to make moves for a new midfielder and a winger in this winter window ahead of the Qatar World Cup. However, following the injury to Gabriel Jesus during international duty with Brazil, the north London club could now change their plans and look to explore the possibility of signing a new striker next month.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with a growing number of forwards in recent weeks ahead of the January window, and Cunha has now emerged as a new potential target for the Gunners.
Previously David Ornstein reported that the north London club are eyeing a move for the Atlético man as a potential replacement for injured Jesus, but they are set to face competition from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Dean Jones has now claimed that Arsenal are keeping all the options open to strengthen their squad and they will keep ‘their eyes’ on Cunha.
Matheus Cunha to Arsenal
The journalist further states that the Gunners are waiting in the wings and could make a January swoop for the South American if he becomes available.
When asked whether Arsenal are looking to make a move for Matheus Cunha this January, Jones said:
“If you’re Arsenal and looking to make the right decisions that define a title challenge, nothing can be dismissed or given up on lightly. That’s why they’ll have their eye on situations like this one. They’re biding their time is how I would read it. They’re waiting to see if there’s an opportunity here.”
Despite failing to perform at his best since moving to the Spanish capital during the summer of 2021, the 23-year-old could still be a good acquisition for Arsenal this January.
The youngster is quick, strong, works extremely hard without possession and likes to press the opposition higher up the field. So, his traits could be a valuable weapon for Arteta’s style of football if he were to join the club.
A previous report stated that Atlético Madrid are now open to cashing in on the 23-year-old next month. With the Brazilian valued at around £17m by Transfermarkt, it will be interesting to see how much Los Rojiblancos will ask to sell the forward this winter.
