Arsenal are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the summer, as per the Spanish outlet Sport.

The 32-year-old joined the Citizens back in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around £24m. The midfielder has enjoyed a stellar time over the last few years at the Etihad Stadium, helping his side in winning numerous domestic cups and four Premier League titles.

But, the midfielder is looking likely to be on his way out of Man City at the end of this season as he has less than four months left on his current contract and is yet to sign an extension with Pep Guardiola’s side.

According to the report by Sport, Gundogan is demanding a huge financial package that Manchester City aren’t prepared to accept so both parties have failed to reach an agreement over a new deal. And City are currently out of the equation to keep hold of the midfielder.

The report further claims that Arsenal are waiting in the wings to take advantage of this situation and they are ready to pounce if the player leaves Man City for free next summer.

Gundogan to Arsenal

However, Sport claims that the player wants a move to Spain and Barcelona are interested in him. But, the Blaugrana won’t be able to sign him if the midfielder stays firm on his economic demands due to the Catalan giants’ financial difficulties.

Mikel Arteta has already worked with the Germany international during his time at Man City as Guardiola’s assistant. So, the Spaniard would be a key factor in this deal to persuade Gundogan to move to the Emirates Stadium if they decide to make a concrete approach to sign him in the summer.

Arsenal purchased Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from the Citizens last summer and both have been stellar signings. So, Arsenal will be hoping that Gundogan will be able to make the same impact as the German’s former City teammates if the midfielder were to join Arteta’s side next summer.

Gundogan – valued at around £22m by Transfermarkt – is a Premier League proven midfielder and possesses an abundance of experience. So, signing a player of his quality for free would be a shrewd business and he would definitely strengthen the Gunners’ engine room should he opts to sign for Arsenal.
