Arsenal open talks to sign Man City star Joao Cancelo

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks to sign Manchester City star Joao Cancelo this summer, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Following Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury-plagued campaign this term, the Gunners have decided to strengthen their defence by signing a new right-back in the upcoming transfer window.

They have been linked with numerous options over the last few months with Ivan Fresneda, Ridle Baku and Jeremie Frimpong being among them. But, Cancelo is now emerging as a serious target.

After falling out with Pep Guardiola, Man City decided to loan out Cancelo to Bayern Munich last winter. But, the Bundesliga giants have opted not to sign him permanently so the Portuguese is set to return to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

However, it has been suggested that Man City have no intention of keeping the 29-year-old at the club and are ready to let him leave in the upcoming transfer window. It seems Arsenal are looking to take advantage of this season and sign him this summer to reinforce their right-back position.

Cancelo to Arsenal

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano previously said that Arsenal have been showing interest in signing Cancelo and they have already held talks with the player’s representatives over a potential move this summer.

Romano said:

“For Cancelo, yes, they are interested. They had some contact, and they have very good relationship with these agents. So there was a conversation over the possibility to sign Cancelo.”

Now, Speaking to the same outlet, the Italian has reported that Arsenal are ‘well informed’ about Cancelo’s current situation and they could make a summer swoop for him to bolster their defence.

However, Romano claims that Arsenal are set to face tough competition from Barcelona in getting any potential deal done for the 29-year-old as they have also been showing an interest in him.

Romano said:

“He[Cancelo] will return to Man City, and he will not stay at Bayern Munich, this is why Arsenal are well informed on the situation. But there is also Barcelona, as they are really interested in Cancelo.”

It has previously been suggested that Man City are ready to let their star man leave if the defender’s potential suitors such as Arsenal submit an offer of around £35m. So, Mikel Arteta’s side would be able to sign Cancelo for an affordable price should they opt to formalise their interest.

Cancelo has already showcased his talent playing at the highest level over the last few years. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
