Arsenal weighing up summer swoop for Pedro Goncalves
Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a summer swoop for Sporting CP star Pedro Goncalves, as per the Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
After narrowly missing out on winning the Premier League title in the recently concluded season, it has widely been suggested that the Gunners are planning to strengthen their squad to challenge on all fronts from next term.
Reinforcing the engine room is seemingly Mikel Arteta’s primary objective in the upcoming transfer window. The North London club have been linked with a host of options over the last few months with Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo being mentioned as priority targets. But Goncalves is now emerging as a potential option.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign this term, scoring 18 goals and registering 12 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions. He played a key role in knocking Arsenal out of the Europa League in the round of 16 stage, scoring an emphatic equaliser from the halfway mark before winning the tie on penalties. So, it appears the Portuguese’s impressive displays for Sporting have caught Mikel Arteta’s attention.
According to the report by O Jogo, Arsenal have been showing a genuine interest in signing Goncalves so they could make a concrete approach to purchase him this summer.
Goncalves to Arsenal
However, the report claims that luring the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium won’t be easy for the Gunners as Aston Villa are also keen on purchasing him in the upcoming transfer window.
Goncalves – valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt – still has more than three years left in his current contract. So, Sporting are in no rush to let their star man leave this summer and Arsenal will have to offer a lucrative proposal to persuade the Liga Portugal giants to sell if they formalise their interest.
The Sporting star is a versatile midfielder – who can play anywhere across the middle of the park. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, is excellent in taking set-pieces and has the ability to create chances for the attackers as well.
Goncalves is also efficient in delivering crosses from the wide-areas, can finish off his chances and also has an eye for scoring goals from distance. The 24-year-old has already showcased his talent in the Portuguese top-flight over the last few years. So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal if they manage to secure his signature this summer.
However, it has been suggested that Rice and Caicedo are Arsenal’s primary options to bolster their engine room. So, perhaps, Goncalves could be an alternative option that they are lining up should they miss out on signing their key targets.
