Arsenal weighing up January swoop for Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a January swoop for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per the recent reports.
The Gunners seemingly entered the summer transfer window with the intention of signing two players to strengthen their engine room. But they eventually opted to sign only Declan Rice and didn’t make a move for anyone else after deciding to keep hold of Thomas Partey.
However, the Ghanaian’s persistent injury issues have become a real problem for the North London club and he has now picked up yet another muscular problem so it seems Arsenal are planning to sign a new midfielder in January to replace the 30-year-old.
According to the report by Football Transfers(via Fichajes), Arsenal are willing to remain busy in the upcoming winter window and are looking to step up their interest in signing Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
The report further claims that the Spaniard has a £51m[€60m] release clause included in his current contract so Arsenal will have to make a big investment to acquire his service.
Zubimendi to Arsenal
However, Fichajes states that luring Zubimendi to the Emirates Stadium won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also keen on securing his signature.
Having recently signed an extension with Imanol Alguacil’s side, the midfielder still has four years left in his current contract. So, the Spanish side are in no rush to let their star man leave so Arsenal will have to trigger his release clause to sign him if they opt to formalise their interest in the winter.
The North London club hold a long-term interest in the Spain international as they were linked with a move for him during the summer window. But Mikel Arteta’s side never made a concrete approach and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will opt to formalise their interest in signing him in the upcoming window.
Zubimendi is a deep-lying midfielder, he is good in the air, excellent in defensive contributions, reads the game well and can link-up the play from defence to attack. So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal should they sign him in January to bolster their midfield department.
