Reports: Arsenal Set To Clinch First Major Signing This Week
It looks like we could finally land a big-money signing this summer with widespread reports claiming that Arsenal are on the verge of sealing the £14m purchase of Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo.
The Brazilian international has been told he’s free to find another club this summer after slipping down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena following the arrivals of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona and Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund.
With the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martínez also available to new boss Pep Guardiola, is seems there is no place for Gustavo in his first team plans and we’re ready to take advantage with the Telegraph one of several newspapers reporting this morning that Arsene Wenger has agreed a fee in the region of £14m and hopes to have the signing tied up before the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday.
Many fans, myself included, have been crying out for a ‘proper’ defensive midfielder to be brought in and it looks like we are now going to get our wish. Mikel Arteta has done an excellent job in front of the defence but it’s time we had an athletic ball-winner in the role and in Gustavo, we’ll have just that.
The 26-year-old will be hungry to prove himself ahead of next summers World Cup and will want to force his way in to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s first team. His versatility will also be a huge asset. He’s predominantly a defensive midfielder but is also capable of playing at the back, so he’ll certainly be a useful addition.

However, we should have learned by now that until it’s up on Arsenal.com, we should believe nothing! So I’m refusing to get my hopes up until it’s official.
Would you welcome the signing of Gustavo?
