Arsenal looking to sign Royal Antwerp star Arthur Vermeeren
Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign Royal Antwerp star Arthur Vermeeren in the upcoming transfer window, as per the transfer insider Dean Jones.
The Gunners prioritised strengthening their engine room in the summer window and purchased Declan Rice from West Ham United in a £105m deal. However, Mikel Arteta was seemingly looking to sign a second midfielder to replace Thomas Partey.
Several players were mentioned as potential targets for Arsenal but they eventually opted not to purchase anyone after deciding to keep hold of the Ghanaian. However, the African’s persistent injury issues have seemingly forced the North London club to think about replacing him next year.
Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Jones has said that Arsenal have been planning to sign a new deep-lying playmaker to deploy Rice in the box-to-box role and have earmarked Vermeeren as a key option.
The journalist further claims that Royal Antwerp are ready to sell their star man if they receive an offer of at least £15m. So, Arteta’s side can manage to secure his signature for an affordable price should they make a concrete approach.
Vermeeren to Arsenal
Jones said:
“There’s a lot around this player. The reason I’ve been writing about Vermeeren is in an Arsenal sense. Arsenal are looking for a defensive midfielder in 2024 to give Declan Rice a bit more freedom and allow him to get box-to-box and show his capabilities going forwards.
“They want a long-term prospect alongside him for that to happen and my understanding was that Vermeeren was one of the guys they were looking at to do that. His transfer fee won’t be that ridiculous, you’re looking at £15-20m for this guy. It feels like a fail proof signing, he’s too good to fail.”
The 18-year-old is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to become a top-class midfielder going forward. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they manage to secure his signature in the upcoming transfer window.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing him to reinforce their midfield department.
