Arsenal open talks to sign Brentford star Ivan Toney
Arsenal have reportedly held initial talks with Brentford star Ivan Toney’s representatives ahead of a potential move in January, as per 90min.
It seems the Gunners are keen on adding firepower to their attacking department in the winter window as they have recently been linked with numerous striker options.
Dusan Vlahovic and Santiago Gimenez have been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club, but Toney is reportedly their primary option.
According to the report by 90min, Arsenal have already made contact with the player’s representatives before making a potential move in the winter window. However, the report claims that Brentford don’t want to let their star man leave for cheap and want at least £80m. So, the Gunners will have to break the bank to secure the Englishman’s signature.
90min states that Toney has been surprised by the Bees’ asking price and he is likely to push for a move if the Gunners decide not to match Brentford’s price tag. Therefore, this will be a big boost for Arsenal to sign the 27-year-old for a lower fee.
Toney to Arsenal
However, the report says that Chelsea are also keen on signing the striker and they have also made contact with the player’s entourage. So, the Gunners are set to face fierce competition from their city rivals in getting any potential deal done for Toney.
After being found guilty of betting issues, Toney has been suspended for eight months. His suspension will be lifted in January next year and he has already started training before getting back to playing football.
Toney enjoyed a stellar campaign last term, scoring 20 goals and registering four assists in 33 league appearances. So, it is going to be interesting to see whether he can replicate the same performance after returning from a long layoff next year.
Nevertheless, Toney is deemed one of the best strikers in the Premier League so he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they manage to secure his signature.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to lure the Brentford star to the Emirates Stadium in January should they formalise their interest.
