Pundit makes claim about Arsenal’s title fate

Ex-striker turned pundit Gary Lineker has given his verdict about the possibility of Arsenal winning the Premier League title this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side surprisingly challenged for the league title last term and were very close to winning it. However, they ran out of steam during the business end and Manchester City eventually managed to retain the title.

After narrowly missing out on winning the league last term, Arsenal opted to spend big last summer to strengthen their squad and close the gap with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Following a successful transfer window, the North London club have enjoyed a promising start, accumulating 27 points from 12 games and sitting only one point behind the table topper Man City.

Now, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker has claimed that Arsenal have had a good start and they have been showing signs that they are becoming a title contender. The former striker further states that they are currently round about the top spot so they could win the title this season.

Lineker predicts Arsenal will win the league

Lineker said:

“They [Arsenal] are still up there, they are still right in it, so I am going to stick with it [them winning the league]. Not with a great deal of confidence but I never had that in the first place, but I do think they have the makings of something. I think they will be fairly close to it. So I am going to stay with my initial prediction that they will win the league.”

Although Arsenal have managed to place themselves in the title race this term, they haven’t been at their very best so far. They have struggled with injury problems and it seems Arteta hasn’t been able to find his best midfield trio yet.

However, it is expected that Arteta will be able to sort out his midfield over the coming months and Arsenal will be able to perform at their best in the second half of this season.

So, it is going to be interesting to see whether Lineker’s prediction comes true and whether Arsenal can overcome their two decades of title drought at the end of this season.
