Arsenal contemplating swoop for Ousmane Diomande
Arsenal are reportedly contemplating a swoop for Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande in the upcoming transfer window, as per the Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
Despite mounting a title charge last term, the Gunners failed to continue their momentum following the injury absence of William Saliba and as a result, they missed out on winning the title. So, Mikel Arteta opted to reinforce their backline last summer and purchase Jurrien Timber from Ajax Amsterdam.
However, the Dutchman has been sidelined for almost the entirety of this term after sustaining a serious knee injury in his Premier League debut. Along With the Netherlands international, Takehiro Tomiyasu is also set to be unavailable for selection in the upcoming few weeks due to an injury.
So the North London club are currently thin in number in their defensive department with Jakub Kiwior struggling to showcase his best after moving to the Emirates Stadium last January.
So, it appears Arsenal are planning to strengthen their backline in January by signing a new defender in order to help Arteta mount a title charge this season.
Diomande to Arsenal
While citing and translating the print version of O Jogo, Sport Witness has reported that Arsenal have been following the development of Diomande ahead of a potential swoop next year and Arteta has been pushing hard to secure his signature.
However, the report claims that Sporting don’t want to let their star man leave in January and if Arsenal want to acquire his service next month then they will have to trigger his £86m release clause. So, Arsenal will have to spend a huge amount of money to sign the defender in winter.
O Jogo also says that along with Diomande, Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres is also on Arsenal’s radar and they could make a move for him to reinforce their frontline in the upcoming window.
Diomande has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few months but they haven’t opted to make a concrete approach yet.
The 20-year-old is a talented player and possesses high potential so he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they sign him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign him in the upcoming transfer window.
