Arsenal urged to make ‘cheeky’ move by signing Wilson
Former midfielder turned pundit Robbie Earle has urged Arsenal to make a ‘cheeky’ move by signing Newcastle United star Callum Wilson to reinforce their frontline.
The Gunners have reportedly been exploring the possibility of signing a new striker to continue their title charge in the second half of this season. Several names have emerged as potential targets but Ivan Toney has been mentioned as their primary option.
However, Brentford reportedly don’t want to let their star man leave the club but they could change their stance if they receive an offer of around £100m.
Arsenal reportedly can’t afford to spend big in January due to FFP regulations so it seems almost impossible for Mikel Arteta’s side to sign Toney this month.
However, speaking on The 2 Robbies, Earle has suggested Arsenal to make a swoop for Wilson as Newcastle could be open to cashing-in on the striker due to their current financial situation.
The pundit further states that Arsenal would be better off signing Wilson on a loan deal until the end of this season as this could be a viable option for them.
Wilson to Arsenal
Earle said:
“I’ll chuck a little one at you. And it probably isn’t going to happen, but what about Callum Wilson? He’s apparently available at Newcastle because of Newcastle’s financial position and whatever. There’s talk about him going on loan to Atletico Madrid. Could I loan him for six months?”
Robbie Mustoe replied:
“Why would Newcastle do that? To release some salary? I mean, you’d do it, if you were Arsenal, you’d totally do that.”
Earle added:
“I’m just saying if Arsenal are looking around at options, could Callum Wilson be a cheeky little option?”
Wilson is a talented player and is a Premier League proven striker so he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal to reinforce their frontline. However, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle allow the striker to join a direct rival if the Gunners make a swoop.
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to listen to the suggestion of Earle and make a move for the Newcastle star before the end of this window to bolster their frontline.
