Ousmane Diamonde: Arsenal have £69m Sporting Lisbon man in their sights
According to A Bola, Arsenal scouts kept a close eye on Sporting Lisbon’s defender Ousmane Diamonde during the African Cup of Nations this winter.
One could argue that Arsenal’s defense is at its strongest right now: they have the most clean sheets (8), and they have conceded the second fewest goals (21).
Mikel Arteta, though, is not that convinced, and he continues to seek a top center back to strengthen his central defensive unit. A number of top center backs have been linked with Arsenal, including Diamonde.
Who is Ousmane Diamonde?
Diamonde is a 20-year-old Ivory Coast defender who’s creating a name for himself in Europe by shining in Sporting Lisbon’s defense.
WhoScored describes him as a strong passer who enjoys dribbling and tackling. This season, he has made 21 appearances for Sporting Lisbon, scoring twice.
Arsenal have been linked with his signing since last summer, when their £30 million bid, according to Portuguese outlet Record, was rebuffed. However, it appears the rejected bid hasn’t put Arsenal off as they’ve continue to scout him at Sporting and with his national team.
The Gunners aren’t the only club showing an interest though, so they’ll face competition. A Bola says Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Juventus are also known to have sent scouts to watch him play at the AFCON.
Any move will wait until the summer and competition for his signature is going to be fierce. As per the report, Diomande has a £69m release clause and Sporting will want the full value given the number of top clubs showing an interest.
Thus far, he has started two of Ivory Coast’s AFCON games. The Elephants are set to face Mali in the quarterfinals after defeating defending champions, Senegal, on penalties in the round of 16, and Diamonde is expected to play a significant role.
