Arsenal takes the lead in Ivan Toney transfer chase
In an attempt to predict some of the summer transfer battles, journalist Dean Jones has given Give Me Sport the latest on the Ivan Toney transfer race and says Arsenal are front-runners so sign him
The Brentford striker, who has scored four goals in seven games since returning from his betting ban, has an array of suitors interested in signing him this summer.
However, Jones claims that Arsenal are leading Chelsea, Tottenham and Man Utd in the chase to sign the 27-year-old. The journalist says sources have confirmed the Gunners have a genuine interest in signing Toney.
With Toney entering the final year of his contract at the GTech Community Stadium, Jones says Arsenal are hopeful he will be available for no more than £60 million, significantly less than his £100 million winter asking price.
Arsenal’s bid to bring Toney to the Emirates in the summer may be economically viable, but other teams are ready to hijack the deal if the North Londoners are unable to get a move over the line.
Toney replacement sorted
Brentford may have already accepted that they will lose Toney. The Bees have announced that striker Igor Thiago will join the club on a five-year contract from Club Bruges on July 1st for £36.5 million.
Thomas Frank, who recently intimated that Toney would leave in the summer, must see the 22-year-old as a suitable successor to the 27-year-old. And he could be right, given that in 25 Jupiler Pro League games this season, he has 16 goals and two assists.
The report says Toney is ready to make a move in the summer and will play his final game for Brentford when they take on Newcastle United on May 19th.
Earlier this season, it became clear that Arteta’s Arsenal project needed a clinical striker. They may have regained their goal-scoring form of late, but they still need to get a top goalscorer. Hopefully, as the favourites to sign Toney, they will win the transfer race.
