Arsenal plotting summer swoop to sign Ousmane Diomande
Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a summer swoop to sign Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande, as per the Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
The Gunners have seemingly been exploring the possibility of signing the 20-year-old over the last few transfer windows as he has continuously been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t opted to make a concrete approach to acquire his service yet but things could be different in the upcoming window. According to the report by O Jogo (via Press Reader), the Gunners have been keeping a close eye on the defender’s development in recent time and may finally opt to formalise their interest this summer.
However, the report further claims that purchasing the defender won’t be easy for Arsenal as Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Juventus are also keen on acquiring his service.
O Jogo says that Diomande has a £69m release clause included in his current contract so Arsenal will have to splash a big fee to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
Diomande to Arsenal
Diomande has been enjoying a stellar campaign this term, guiding Sporting to mount a title charge. In addition, the defender has displayed his qualities on the international stage as well, helping Ivory Coast win the AFCON last month.
So, it appears having been impressed by the youngster’s recent excellent performances, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him ahead of next season.
Diomande, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, excellent in defensive contributions and also reads the game well.
The defender is a versatile player as he is a centre-back by traits but can also be deployed in the right-back position. Arteta likes to have versatile players at his disposal so Diomande could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him.
I think Arsenal may not entertain making a move for him if Sporting stay firm on their inflated £69m valuation. So, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing Diomande this summer.
