Arsenal forced to wait to sign Ajax star Jorrel Hato

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano via Caught Offside has cast doubt on Ajax teen defender Jorrel Hato’s summer move to Arsenal.

Hato is enjoying a breakout 2023–24 season with Ajax and he’s emerging as one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe. His style resembles that of Gabriel Magalhaes or Nathan Ake, but with a sprinkle of William Saliba.

He is a top talent, and Arsenal, among other teams, have been constantly scouting him ahead of a potential move. Several reports in recent months have suggested the Gunners would try to lure Hato to England this summer.

The Dutch youngster is valued at around £19m, so he could have been a cost-effective, and long-term, signing for Arsenal.

Hato to Arsenal, the latest:

Well, the most recent news on the Gunners’ move for the teen prodigy isn’t as encouraging as many expected.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutch giants do not want to lose their defensive star. Hato has signed a new long-term contract, committing his future to Ajax until 2028, with no release clause included in the new deal.

With the contract extension, it will be more difficult for Arsenal to sign the 18-year-old, who some believe is as technically gifted as Jurrien Timber, with the only difference being that he is left-footed.

Hato, according to the European transfer guru, is unlikely to leave Ajax this summer, but his situation ‘could change’ in 2025, so Arsenal may have to wait until next year before signing him.

Romano said:

“Staying with Arsenal, they have scouted talented young Ajax defender Jorel Hato multiple times, but he’s now set to sign a new contract. The new deal will be valid until June 2028, with no release clause included.

“So, there is no movement expected for Hato this summer, but it could change especially in 2025, and Arsenal are one of the teams who have sent scouts to monitor him on several occasions.”

Unfortunately, Jorrel Hato may not be able to move to the Emirates this summer. He may have made an excellent complement to Arteta’s concept. But let’s hope he continues to fly at the Johan Cruyff Arena, so that when the Gunners come calling in 2025, he’ll be ready to join and instantly hit the ground running.
