Arsenal in battle to sign Sunderland keeper Anthony Patterson

The Sunderland Echo links Championship goalie Anthony Patterson with a move to Arsenal, days after Fichajes said that he might be a transfer target for them.

Patterson has been a consistent performer between the sticks for Sunderland over the last two seasons, playing every minute in the championship since the start of the 2022–23 season. Last year, he was also rewarded for his fine form with a call up to the England under-21 squad.

His impressive performance has garnered a lot of attention, with the Sunderland Echo (which partly cites This is Anfield) reporting that Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Patterson but face stiff competition from Liverpool.

According to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have already started making arrangements for life without Patterson as Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle is being considered by Sunderland decision-makers as a potential replacement.

The report says Sunderland could demand up to £20 million for 6ft 2inch Patterson due to the amount of interest being shown from the top flight.

David Raya, currently on loan from Brentford, has solidified his position as Arsenal’s No. 1 in recent months. Since he took over Aaron Ramsdale’s spot in Arsenal’s starting lineup after the September international break, he has continued to impress.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to convert his initial £3 million loan deal to a permanent deal worth £27 million. However, Mikel Arteta is in the market for another goalkeeper to replace Ramsdale – who is tipped to leave in the summer.

Patterson is the latest to emerge as a target after impressing in the Championship with his exceptional shot-stopping ability.

At just 23 years old, he is proving to be a standout goalkeeper. His next big opportunity could be a move to the Emirates Stadium. Next season, hopefully, while training alongside one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers, Raya, he will have the opportunity to enhance his crossing and distribution skills, which have been subject to criticism.
