Santiago Gimenez Feyenoord

According to Rudi Galleti, Arsenal are ‘in the race’ to sign Santiago Gimenez but face competition from arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Gimenez, who plays for Feyenoord, has captivated the European football scene with his goal-scoring exploits. Last season in the Dutch League, the Mexican hitman scored 15 goals and provided 3 assists in 32 games. This season, he has increased his output with 21 goals and 5 assists in 28 games.

His form in front of goal has caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League. Galleti claims that Arsenal have now joined the race to sign Gimenez having monitored his progress for a long time.

However, the Gunners face competition from Tottenham for his signature, while the journalist says several clubs have already made approaches to sign the striker ahead of the summer.

Gimenez perfect for Arsenal

The Gunners appear to be showing a keen interest in signing Gimenez but any potential deal won’t be cheap as he won’t be available for less than the £87 million Manchester United paid for Antony.

Arsenal need a clinical striker to spearhead their attack and Gimenez fits the bill. According to WhoScored, he may need to improve his defensive and passing skills to suit Arteta’s system, but there is no doubt he is a lethal striker who would add a clinical edge the the Arsenal front line if he moved to the Emirates Stadium.

There have been occasions this season — particularly the losses to Newcastle United, West Ham, Fulham and Aston Villa — where it was clear that Arsenal would have performed better with a clinical striker up front.

Perhaps next season, they will have weaponized their offense by beating Spurs to Gimenez’s signature. With the Mexican leading the line up front, Arsenal may finally have the poacher they need to compete for trophies on all fronts next season.
