Arsenal remain keen on signing Aston Villa star Luiz
Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, as per Football Insider.
Despite signing for Manchester City from Vasco da Gama back in 2017, the Brazilian never played for the Citizens and instead, he was sent out on loan to Girona straightaway.
Having been impressed by the South American’s displays in La Liga, the Villans opted to purchase him back in 2019 for a fee of around £15m. Upon moving to Villa Park, the 25-year-old has established himself as a key player for the West Midlands club over the last few years.
After being impressed by the midfielder’s performances for Aston Villa, Arsenal have registered a firm interest in signing him. The Gunners tried to acquire his service a few years ago, but the Villans didn’t allow his departure so a deal didn’t materialise.
Now, according to the report by Football Insider, although Arsenal failed to secure Luiz’s signature a couple of years ago, they remain keen on signing him and could reignite their interest in the off-season.
The report further claims that with Mohamed Elneny, Jorginho and Thomas Partey’s future currently hanging in balance at the Emirates Stadium, they could look to sign a new midfielder to bolster the engine room and have identified Luiz as one of the targets.
Luiz to Arsenal
However, Football Insider states that purchasing the Brazilian won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Barcelona are also keen on signing him.
With Luiz set to enter the final two years of his current contract this summer, Aston Villa could opt to cash-in on their star man to make the most profit out of his departure, especially given, it has been suggested that Unai Emery’s side could be forced to sell one of their star man this summer to raise funds in order to sign new players ahead of next season.
Aston Villa reportedly want a fee of around £100m to sell the South American so Arsenal will have to break the bank to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in the off-season.
Luiz is a highly talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Mikel Arteta’s possession-based system so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they can eventually manage to acquire his service in the upcoming window.
