Arsenal eyeing swoop to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer
Arsenal are looking to add a top striker this summer, and according to the Evening Standard, Benjamin Sesko is one of the centre forwards they could sign.
The Slovenian prospect, who joined RB Leipzig from their sister club RB Salzburg last summer, has shown tremendous potential; in 26 league appearances, he has 9 goals and 2 assists. However, prior to his time at RB Leipzig, he showed glimpses of the striker he may become. In his final season with RB Salzburg, he scored 16 goals and provided three assists in 30 league appearances.
After a disappointing end to last season, Arteta’s team has shown significant development this season; they have clearly been superior defensively but have struggled offensively at times.
Many thought Mikel Arteta may sign a striker in the winter after Arsenal dropped needless points after squandering numerous chances in front of goal. The defeat to West Ham was particularly costly given Arsenal created over 20 chances but failed to score.
The Gunners opted not to strengthen in the winter, and Arsenal saw a marked improvement in their attack after their break in Dubai. The North Londoners found their touch in front of goal and secured sizeable victories over the past few months to now boast the best goal difference in the league.
However, old habits die hard, and Arsenal’s struggles in attack have returned at the worst possible time. A disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa last week exposed their lack of clinical striker once again as Arsenal wasted chances to win the game in the first half.
The Gunners then limped out of the Champions League in midweek, barely mustering a shot on goal in the second half as Bayern Munich booked their place in the semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 win.
Sesko tempting Arsenal
Most Arsenal fans feel signing a clinical striker is a necessity this summer, and widespread newspaper reports suggest Arteta is indeed planning to bring in a new frontman at the end of the season.
Several names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, but Sesko is now emerging as a potential target.
According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal are interested in signing the RB Leipzig player, and they highlight two key reasons why Sesko could be the player Arteta ultimately goes for.
Firstly, he is available for just £42.5 million due to his release clause. This is significantly lower than most other reported targets, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Alexander Isak and Victor Gyokeres all expected to cost well above £80m.
Also, the report points out that Sesko’s wage demands will be much lower than other names on Arsenal’s list, so overall the package to sign the Leipzig man will be a lot less compared to other targets.
That would leave Arsenal with more funds in the kitty to strengthen other areas of the squad, with Arteta also keen on signing a winger and central midfielder this summer.
