Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Ajax Amsterdam star Jorrel Hato this summer, as per the transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

Despite enjoying a stellar campaign, the Gunners have to make do without winning a trophy this term. So, it has been suggested that they are set to spend big in the upcoming window to reinforce the squad and challenge on all fronts next season.

Mikel Arteta’s side are reportedly prioritising strengthening the frontline and the engine room in the upcoming window. But, purchasing a new defender to bolster the backline is also on the North London club’s wish-list.

Numerous defenders have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with Miguel Gutierrez and Ferdi Kadioglu being among them. But, Hato is reportedly on their radar as well.

However, reporting on HITC, Bailey has stated that Manchester United have now also expressed their interest in signing Hato and they could make a concrete approach to purchase him this summer.

But, the journalist says that although the Red Devils have now joined the race, Arsenal are currently in ‘pole position’ to lure the 18-year-old to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Bailey also states that Arteta’s side tried to purchase the youngster back in January and having missed out on signing him last time around, they are now ready to secure his signature ahead of next season.

Hato, valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt, still has four years left in his current contract having recently signed an extension with Ajax. So, the Eredivisie giants are currently in a strong position to demand a sizable amount of money to let their star man leave this summer.

With Jakub Kiwior linked with a move away from the club in recent times, Arsenal would be better off signing a new defender if the Polish international leaves the club and Hato could be a shrewd signing should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to secure the Dutchman’s signature in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce the defensive department.
