Arsenal eye surprise swoop to sign Joao Felix this summer

Arsenal are reportedly considering making a surprise swoop to sign Atletico Madrid outcast Joao Felix this summer, as per a recent report.

The Portuguese joined Los Rojiblancos from SL Benfica with the reputation of being one of the best young talents in the world. However, things haven’t panned out for him at the Estadio Metropolitano as he struggled to flourish his career under Diego Simeone.

After falling out with the Argentinian boss, Felix went out on loan to Chelsea in January last year before spending a season-long loan at Barcelona last term.

However, while his performances didn’t convince the Blues to purchase him, Barcelona aren’t too keen on securing his signature either as he never managed to break into Xavi Hernandez’s starting eleven last season.

So, as it stands, Felix is set to return to Atletico Madrid after spending his holidays, therefore, speculation surrounding his future has been growing in this transfer window.

Felix to Arsenal

Journalist Matteo Moretto has reported (via Mundo Deportivo) that Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Felix as they feel their playing system could fit the Portuguese perfectly.

However, the Spanish outlet states that Arsenal aren’t the only club interested in him as SL Benfica, Fenerbahce and Aston Villa have also been tracking him while Barcelona haven’t completely pulled out of this race yet.

Atletico Madrid reportedly want a fee of around £50m to let their asset – who still has five years left in his current contract – leave the club. Therefore, the North London club will have to splash a big fee to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.

Felix is an extremely talented player – who is is technically sound, can link-up the play and also has an eye for scoring goals. But his lackadaisical approach out of position might not be suitable for the Premier League. His inability to prove his worth during a short stint at Chelsea was a reflection of that.

Therefore, Arsenal would be better off exploring other options to bolster their attacking department. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually decide to make a concrete approach to purchase him in this transfer window.
