Arsenal remain in talks to sign Real Sociedad star Merino

By on August 8, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly continuing negotiations with Real Sociedad over the deal to sign Mikel Merino this summer, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After agonisingly missing out on winning the Premier League title in the previous two seasons, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that he is desperate to become the English champions next campaign.

The Gunners are looking to reinforce their squad in this window to help the Spanish boss achieve his goals next term and have already signed Riccardo Calafiori.

Moreover, the North London club are reportedly aiming to sign a new midfielder before the end of this window and have earmarked Merino as the priority target.

Arsenal have already agreed on personal terms with the 28-year-old and now writing on the Daily Briefing, Romano has reported that the Gunners are continuing negotiations with La Real to find an agreement over this deal.

Merino to Arsenal

The journalist further claims that Merino is ready to move to the Emirates Stadium and is now waiting for the two clubs to find an agreement regarding the transfer fee.

Romano also states that Arsenal are in talks verbally with Real Sociedad and are in discussion regarding the payment terms and the structure.

Romano wrote:

“My understanding is that negotiations continue, it’s still all verbal with no formal bid but for sure Merino is waiting for Arsenal to complete the agreement with Real Sociedad. It’s also about payment terms, the structure, more things to follow between the two clubs. Merino wants Arsenal, so it’s just on the clubs now.”

Merino has a £55m release clause in his contract but considering he has entered the final year of his deal and doesn’t want to renew it, Real Sociedad are ready to cash in on him in a cut-price deal and are open to accepting around £26m.

The Spaniard is an experienced player so he should be able to hit the ground running straightaway in the Premier League if he eventually joins, especially given he already has experience of playing in the English top-flight during his time with Newcastle United.

It is going to be interesting to see how the North London club perform next season if they sign all of their intended targets this summer.
