RATINGS: My Ratings From Arsenal’s Vital 2-1 Win Over Marseille
We secured a vital 2-1 win over Marseille in our Champions League Group F opener on Wednesday night. Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey were among the goals while the Welshman gave away our fourth penalty of the season in the final minute to gift the hosts a consolation.
Here are my ratings from the game:
Szczesny 7.5/10
Didn’t put a foot wrong. Did everything that was asked of him, including several ‘routine’ saves. Commanded his box well and could do nothing to stop a superb penalty from Ayew.
Sagna 6.5/10
Reverted to right-back and although he had a solid game, I think I prefer him in the middle! Was given a bit of a tough time by Valbuena in the first half.
Mertesacker 7/10
Made a vital interception at the front post shortly before half time that denied a certain goal. Sliced a clearance that almost resulted in a goal for the home side but otherwise was a towering presence at the back and kept Gignac relatively quiet.
Koscielny 7/10
Solid enough from the Frenchman. A few wayward headers and clearances but did his bit to keep a tricky Marseille attack at bay.
Gibbs 8.5/10
Almost opened the scoring but saw his shot saved early in the second half before his headed goal-line clearance prevented a certain Marseille goal after a mistake by Per. Was our best defender and put in an excellent all-round display, including setting up the opener with a superb cross.
Flamini 7/10
Another impressive display by the Frenchman. His energy and defensive instincts are important to the balance of our midfield.
Ramsey 8.5/10
MOTM, again. Another superb all-action performance by Rambo capped with a fine goal. Was unlucky to give away a late penalty. The man is on fire.
Wilshere 7/10
Almost opened the scoring but saw his far post volley well saved. I’m not a fan of him out on the left as his instinct is to drift inside and it leaves us un-balanced and exposed, but he was still influential and did his best to help Gibbs out.
Ozil 7/10
Set up Gibbs with a stunning back heel before sending Walcott clear minutes later, but neither resulted in a goal. Might not have been as influential as his debut but he oozes class whenever he’s on the ball. Flashed a shot wide after some good work and showed he has some pace as well at times.
Walcott 7/10
Bright early on and looked like he had the beating of his full-back but faded in the first half as Marseille took over. Wasted a good opportunity early in the second half after being sent clear by Ozil but failed to get a shot off. Finally opened his account for the season with a stunning volley.
Giroud 6.5/10
Couldn’t get in the game during a dull first half. In fact he only touched the ball 12 times in the opening 45 minutes. But he came alive in the second period and was a real handful.
Subs:
Monreal – 6.5 – On for the last 15 minutes and showed a few nice touches.
Miyaichi – N/A – on too late.
So we’re off to a great start in the Champions League and our next two European games are at the Emirates – although it seems we’re stronger on the road as this win was our 10th in a row away from home!
