Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have urged Arsenal to sign Brentford star Ivan Toney to strengthen the attacking department.

It was thought earlier this window that the Gunners would prioritise signing a new striker this summer but with the transfer market set to slam shut in less than two weeks, they haven’t signed any attacker yet.

Numerous names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with Toney being among them. He is even said to be keen on leaving the Bees to take a new challenge in his career with his current contract set to expire at the end of this season.

Now, speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, Richards has said (via the Express) that Arsenal should sign the 28-year-old as although he might not fit Mikel Arteta’s system perfectly, he would provide different options off the bench should they purchase him.

The former defender further claims that Toney was valued at around £70m a few years ago so if they can sign him for around £15m due to his current contract situation then that would be a bargain acquisition for them.

Toney to Arsenal

He said:

“You know who I would go and buy? Ivan Toney. He was left out obviously and there’s chatter about him heading to Saudi. He might not perfectly fit Arsenal’s style, how they want to press and play, but he’s a different option from off the bench.

“He would provide them with something unique, a different dimension. Particularly considering the figures, he’s got a year left on his contract and there was speculation about him going for only £15m. For a player who was valued at £70m a few seasons ago. In terms of what he can bring, I think he would be a good fit.”

Meanwhile, Lineker agrees with Richards and says that Toney is a ‘super talented’ player and technically sound so he would be a ‘good fit’ for the North London club should they hire him.

Lineker said:

“I like Ivan Toney a lot. I think he’s super talented and gives you a completely different from what else they’ve got. He’s a real threat and technically a really good footballer so I think he would fit in at Arsenal. Once you’re at the stage where a player is left out, the writing does appear to be on the wall.”

Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli are reportedly pushing forward to sign the player and as a result, he was left out of the Bees squad for their opening Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace – where they won the game 2-1.

So, it is looking unlikely that Arsenal will formalise their interest in signing him to strengthen the attack before the end of this transfer window.
