Arsenal ‘made attempts’ to sign Kingsley Coman this summer
Arsenal reportedly ‘made attempts’ to sign Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman this summer, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners didn’t make any major acquisitions in the recently concluded transfer window but added a few new faces to freshen up the squad. Riccardo Calafiori joined the club from Bologna to bolster the backline, while Mikel Merino signed from Real Sociedad to add depth in the midfield department.
Moreover, following Aaron Ramsdale’s departure, Neto joined on deadline day to support David Raya, while Mikel Arteta hired Raheem Sterling from Chelsea very late on deadline day to bolster the flanks.
However, Fichajes states that Arsenal were interested in Coman and even ‘made attempts’ to secure his signature before the end of the window. But a deal eventually didn’t come to fruition so, they eventually decided to go for Sterling.
The report says Arsenal weren’t the only club that tried to sign the Frenchman as Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United also attempted to hire him but he eventually decided to stay at Bayern Munich, although the Bavarian club were open to letting him leave.
Coman to Arsenal
Coman has displayed his qualities at the highest level during his time with Bayern Munich over the last few years, helping his side win every possible tournament. He even scored the solitary goal for the German giants in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain back in 2020.
Following the game, then-manager of Bayern Munich Hansi Flick said that the 28-year-old has ‘incredible talent’.
So, there is no doubt about the Frenchman’s qualities but he has struggled with fitness problems in recent times, therefore it would have been a risky move to sign him by spending a big fee.
Coman, valued at around £42m by Transfermarkt, still has three years left in his current contract, moreover, the forward currently earns around £14m-a-year[€17m] in salary. Therefore, it was the right decision not to go for him to strengthen the attacking department.
Meanwhile, after the international break, Arsenal will face off against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. Following that, they will have to face a busy run of fixtures as the Champions League will also commence later this month.
