Arsenal lead race to sign Sporting star Morten Hjulmand
Arsenal are reportedly in pole position to sign Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.
The Gunners bolstered the midfield department by signing Mikel Merino in the summer. But, they would need to revamp this area at the end of this season as Thomas Partey and Jorginho are expected to leave the club.
The duo have entered the final few months of their respective contracts and it is highly unlikely that the North London club will offer a new deal to them, considering they have already entered their 30s.
Therefore, if the duo eventually leave the club next summer then Arsenal will have to sign proper replacements for them. Fichajes states that Arsenal are interested in Hjulmand and are currently leading the race to hire him.
Having moved to Jose Alvalade Stadium last year, the 25-year-old has a contract until 2028 with the Lions and he reportedly has a £67m release clause included in his current deal.
Hjulmand to Arsenal
However, the Spanish outlet says that Manchester United and Liverpool are also at the forefront of signing the Denmark international so it won’t be straightforward for the Gunners to purchase him.
Hjulmand is a holding midfielder by traits but can also play in the box-to-box role. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, is good in the air and is also excellent in defensive contributions.
Therefore, he could be an ideal option to replace Party if Arsenal part ways with the Ghanaian and sign Hjulmand ahead of next season. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually make a concrete approach to sign him to reinforce the midfield department.
Meanwhile, following a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League, Arsenal are currently five points behind the title rivals and league leaders Manchester City.
Therefore, Mikel Arteta’s side are winless in their last two games in the league. Now, they will face off against Newcastle United and Chelsea away from home in their next two league games so the fixture won’t become easy for them.
