Arsenal are reportedly considering making a move to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Gunners decided to strengthen the engine room by signing a new midfielder in the summer. They were linked with a host of names with Zubimendi among them but eventually opted to sign the Spaniard’s former colleague Mikel Merino.

Liverpool came closest to purchasing the 25-year-old in the last transfer window but the player eventually rejected a move to the Merseyside club in favour of staying at his boyhood club.

Now, Fichajes states that Arsenal are willing to sign a new midfielder as Thomas Partey and Jorginho’s current contract will expire at the end of this season and have identified Zubimendi as a serious target.

Mikel Arteta believes the Real Sociedad star would be an ideal option to reinforce the midfield so the North London club have been monitoring his performances closely before making a potential move next year.

Zubimendi to Arsenal

Zubimendi has a £50m release clause in his current contract therefore the Emirates club will have to splash a large sum to lure the midfielder away from Anoeta.

However, the report says purchasing the Spain international won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Liverpool are still interested in him and additionally, Manchester City are keen on hiring him.

Zubimendi is a technically sound deep-lying playmaker and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s possession-based system.

He has already proven his worth in a top league like La Liga and has established himself as a key player for Spain. He was a part of La Roja’s squad that won the European Championship in the summer and even played the second half of the final against England, replacing Rodri.

Zubimendi would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to sign him next year.

Meanwhile, following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Preston North End in the EFL Cup fourth round, Arsenal will take on Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium in the quarter-final of this competition.
