Arsenal hold talks to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton
Arsenal have reportedly held talks over a deal to sign Crystal Palace midfielder, Adam Wharton, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners decided to strengthen the midfield department by signing Mikel Merino in the summer but Mikel Arteta’s side might have to delve into the market once again next year to revamp this position.
Thomas Partey has already entered the final few months of his existing deal and considering he is set to turn 32 next year, it is looking unlikely that the North London club will offer a new contract to him. The Ghanaian has also had injury problems in recent times and that is another reason why Arteta might be looking to part ways with him and hire a new younger midfielder.
Moreover, Jorginho has also been in a similar contractual situation as Partey and the Italian will turn 33 next month. The former Chelsea man has found himself completely out of favour this season so his time at the club is seemingly edging towards the end.
Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal want to sign a new midfielder in January and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is on their wish-list. However, Wharton is on their radar as well and they have already held talks over a deal to secure his service.
Wharton to Arsenal
The 20-year-old is prepared to leave the Eagles to take the next step in his career and the South London club are ready to cash-in on him if they receive an offer of around £54m.
However, the report say Arsenal don’t want to spend that much and are hoping to seal the deal in January for a fee of around £46m.
Purchasing Wharton won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on signing him.
The youngster has burst onto the scene after displaying promising performances for Crystal Palace in recent times. He is comfortable playing in the deep-lying playmaker position as well as the box-to-box role.
The youngster has the necessary attributes to flourish in Arteta’s system. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club eventually manage to sign him in January to bolster the midfield department.
