Arsenal eye raid to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui

By on November 28, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a swoop to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui, as per transfer journalist Ekrem Konur.

It was widely reported that the Gunners wanted to sign a new centre-forward last summer and was linked with a plethora of names with Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko being among them.

However, they eventually opted not to make a move for any new striker before the deadline. Instead, they decided to sell Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace late in the window.

As a result, Mikel Arteta has been left with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus as the number nine options. The German has showcased glimpses of his qualities thus far this season but the Brazilian has had a dire start to this season.

Now, writing on X, Konur states that Arsenal are interested in signing a new striker and have identified Retegui as a serious target. The North London club have been monitoring the Italian international’s displays closely this season before making a potential swoop.

Retegui to Arsenal

Having moved to Gewiss Stadium last summer, the striker has a contract until 2028 with La Dea. But, they are prepared to cash-in on him if they receive an offer of around £38m.

The journalist says Napoli and Juventus are also keen on signing him so it won’t be straightforward for the Emirates club to get any potential deal done for him.

Konur wrote:

“Napoli, Juventus and Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Atalanta’s 25-year-old striker Mateo Retegui. Atalanta are looking to sell Retegui and the transfer fee requested is around £38 million.”

Retegui has been in tremendous form thus far this season, scoring 14 goals and registering three assists in 15 starts in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The 25-year-old has been helping his side mount a title charge this term, sitting only one point behind the Serie A topper Napoli. Moreover, they are also in a solid position to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Arsenal need a new striker and Retegui would add depth to their frontline if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates Club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his service next year.
