Arsenal remain keen on signing Nico Williams
Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners came very close to winning the Premier League title in the last two consecutive campaigns. But, they eventually fell short of achieving that on both occasions.
So, Mikel Arteta made it clear ahead of this season that his primary objective is to finally win the league title this season. However, Arsenal have been inconsistent thus far this season.
They are currently second in the league with 40 points from 20 games sitting, six points behind the league leaders Liverpool – who have a game in hand.
On the other hand, after losing to Manchester United, they have now been knocked out of the FA Cup and are on the verge of elimination from the Carabao Cup having lost to Newcastle United in the first leg of the semi-final.
Williams to Arsenal
The North London club’s attacking department haven’t been at their best this term. On top of that, they have started picking up injury problems in this area of the pitch.
Bukayo Saka has been sidelined with a hamstring issue in recent weeks, while Gabriel Jesus sustained a serious knee injury last time out against Man Utd.
Now, reporting on GiveMeSport, Romano says that Arsenal are keen on signing Williams to bolster the attack with Arteta being a big fan of him.
However, purchasing him won’t be cheap as he wants a big salary package and has a £49m release clause in his current contract. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Arteta’s side to get the deal done this month.
Arsenal hold a long-term interest in the Spain international as they were keen on signing him last summer after being impressed by his displays for the club and country. However, the Basque club eventually managed to keep hold of him.
The 22-year-old likes to play on the left flank but is also comfortable on the opposite side. He has proven his worth in La Liga in recent times after establishing himself as a talismanic figure for Athletic Bilbao.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before the deadline.
