Arsenal hold discussion to sign Lille star Jonathan David
Arsenal have reportedly held a discussion to sign LOSC Lille star Jonathan David, as per the Daily Mail.
The Canadian’s future has been a subject of speculation in recent times as his existing deal with Les Dogues is set to expire at the end of this campaign.
It has been reported that the forward is unlikely to sign a new deal with the French side, meaning he is set to leave as a free agent next summer unless he moves away in this window.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Arsenal want to strengthen the frontline and have ‘discussed internally’ over a deal to sign the 25-year-old.
However, David isn’t the only option on the North London club’s wish-list as Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Alexander Isak are also on their radar.
David to Arsenal
David has been in excellent form thus far this season, scoring 18 goals and registering seven assists in 31 appearances in all competitions. The forward has showcased that he has the ability to perform at his best in big games as he has scored against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool in the Champions League. The North American’s goals helped his side beat both Madrid clubs.
After joining Arsenal from Chelsea ahead of last season, Kai Havertz started his life at the Emirates Stadium slowly before ending the campaign strongly. However, he has been inconsistent thus far this term, scoring eight goals in 20 Premier League appearances.
Gabriel Jesus is another option Mikel Arteta has to deploy in the centre-forward position. However, he has been struggling with fitness problems and has now picked up a serious knee issue. As a result, the Brazilian’s season is over.
Therefore, strengthening the striker department would be the right decision and David could be a shrewd acquisition if Arsenal purchase him. Signing a player of his qualities for free would be an excellent business. However, even if Arteta’s side decide to hire the Lille star, they would be better off going for a more proven striker like Isak.
Meanwhile, following a hard-fought victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, Arsenal will face off against Girona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
