After surviving a narrow and controversial 1-0 win against Wolves, Arsenal are heading towards a mix of domestic encounters in February after their Champions League game with Girona on Wednesday.

They will aim to solidify their place in the League and put constant pressure on dethroning Liverpool in first place, hoping to end their two-decade-long drought of a Premier League triumph. Each game carries its narrative, and Arsenal will need to perform at their best to maintain their momentum in the top flight. Here’s a detailed breakdown of Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures;

Girona Vs. Arsenal (Wednesday 29th January, UEFA Champions League)

Arsenal travel to face Girona in the last League phase fixture of the UEFA Champions League in the coming week. A matchup that would bring together two teams with contrasting European experiences. While Girona are relatively new to the European stage, Arsenal have decades of Champions League experience and would bank on their quality to claim all three points in Spain.

The Gunners currently sit 3rd in the newly introduced UCL League phase table and have had a wonderful run in Europe, winning 5 games and drawing and losing one in their last seven games while only conceding twice. The Gunners have sealed qualification to the knockout stages of the tournament but require at least one point in the final game to secure a Top-8 finish, which guarantees them a direct entry into the tournament’s Round of 16 while avoiding the playoff rounds later next month. The game is an opportunity for Arsenal to assert their dominance against a less experienced opponent and possibly win a 3rd or 2nd position which would set them apart to play a weaker opponent after the playoffs.

Girona, on the other hand, has already been eliminated from the competition and a win against their English visitors will not save them. They got to experience Champions League football for the first time after an outstanding 2023/24 La Liga season, managing just a win in seven games (six defeats). With little left to fight for, Mikel Arteta’s side would be on their feet to avoid a possible upset and seal their Top-8 dream to further compete in the knockout stages.

Arsenal Vs. Manchester City (Sunday 2nd February, English Premier League)

Arsenal will welcome Manchester City to the Emirates Stadium in their first game in February 2025. This is one of the most anticipated games this season seeing the history that has brewed between Pep Guardiola’s side and Mikel Arteta’s side in the last few seasons of the Premier League.

Manchester City have been Arsenal’s nemesis in the last two seasons, with City not only dominating their head-to-head record but clinching the Premier League title from them with a few points separating both sides. Arsenal’s last Premier League victory over City came in October 2023, but despite being tired in recent games, the Gunners always looked to be the better team. Mikel Arteta, a former assistant to Pep Guardiola, has injected a fresh tactical approach into Arsenal’s gameplay this season, making this a closer contest in recent encounters. A home game at the Emirates Stadium offers Arsenal an advantage to break their streak against City and reinforce their title pursuit.

Manchester City who are still recovering from the horrors of the first half of the season found their way back into the Top-4 in the League with a win over Chelsea this weekend. They’ve made significant signings in the January transfer window to cover some loops and injuries they struggled with throughout the first half of the season. They hope to continue on this winning run to cover the deficit between Liverpool and Arsenal above. This game is a great opportunity to do so.

Newcastle United Vs. Arsenal (Wednesday 5th February, English Carabao Cup, 2nd Leg)

Arsenal face a severe test against Newcastle in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a surprising 2-0 defeat at the Emirates. This is a crucial clash as both teams aim to secure silverware this season.

Having been eliminated in the FA Cup (on penalties against Manchester United), Mikel Arteta’s team will be fighting the reality of not making silverware in another strong footing campaign if they fail to turn the tables in Newcastle. Liverpool and the persistent Manchester City threaten their claim to the Premier League and they have a very poor history of making it to the finals of the Champions League. Having not won a Carabao Cup in nearly two decades, Arsenal will put their all to make something out of this opportunity.

Newcastle has been a force under Eddie Howe, making them a tough opponent to crack open. Historically, Arsenal have dominated this rivalry, winning the majority of their Premier League clashes, but Newcastle’s recent form, hunger for silverware, and home advantage will test Arsenal’s resolve.

Leicester City Vs. Arsenal (Saturday 15th February, English Premier League)

Arsenal visit the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City for the first time since the Foxes returned to English top-flight football. Arsenal secured a 4-2 victory in their last meeting in the first half of the season to reclaim the second spot in the League. They will be going all in again this time to capitalize on Lecicester’s poor form to add to their glory.

Leicester, however, are a side capable of causing upsets, as seen in the Championship last season and of course their 2015/16 title-winning campaign. Arsenal would likely dominate more of the possession which would be key to overcoming Leicester’s counter-attacking style of play. Set-pieces would also be a great way to break the Foxes defense.

Arsenal Vs. West Ham United (Saturday 22nd February, English Premier League)

The London derby against West Ham United is always fiercely contested. The Hammers will travel North to face the Gunners in a bid to avenge the 5-2 beating at the London stadium.

West Ham under new coach Graham Potter is yet to find the balance they are looking for and is actively making suitable changes in the January transfer window. The 2023 UEFA Conference League winners are bidding to finish in a European qualification position in the Premier League this season and beating the Gunners would be a good boost in the actualization of this dream.

Arsenal will be determined to play solid football on home turf and secure victory against a team they defeated in the first half of the season. Their creativity in midfield and finishing in attack will be crucial in securing a win at home.

Nottingham Forest Vs. Arsenal (Wednesday 26th February, English Premier League)

Nottingham Forest hosts Arsenal in their final game in February. With both teams having similar aspirations to qualify for European football next season, It would be both a difficult and interesting game.

Forest have been rebuilding and re-establishing themselves in the Premier League and with recent success they sit in the Top four. They will look forward to using their home advantage to frustrate the Gunners with their organized defense, while also aiming to exploit any counter-attacking opportunities against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal’s quality and depth make them favorites to win this game, but Forest’s passionate home crowd and resilience will test the Gunners. Arsenal will aim to avoid any slip-ups as they push for points in the title race.
