Arsenal are reportedly prepared to trigger Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams’s release clause to sign him, as per Football Transfers.

The Spaniard attracted a lot of attention in the summer transfer window after enjoying a stellar campaign last term. In 29 La Liga starts, he made 16 goal contributions and also guided his country to win the European Championship by scoring a goal in the final last summer.

The Gunners were said to be keen on signing him in the last transfer window, while Barcelona were also interested in him. But, the Basque club eventually managed to keep hold of him.

Williams has had a quiet campaign this season, making only four goal contributions in La Liga. But, he has showcased his qualities in the Europa League, scoring twice and registering as many assists in eight matches.

Now, Football Transfers state that Arsenal want a new striker but are also looking to reinforce the wide areas and Williams is Mikel Arteta’s ‘priority’ target. Arsenal attempted to purchase him in this window and were ready to trigger his £48m release clause.

But, they eventually failed to get the deal done, however, Arteta’s side are still keen on hiring him and are prepared to reignite their interest in the summer window.

Arsenal could even offer a bit more than the release clause to structure the deal more favourable way to avoid PSR complications with the player ready to move to the Emirates Stadium.

The presence of Mikel Merino and David Raya, the player’s international colleagues, in Arsenal’s squad played a vital role in the player’s decision to accept Arsenal’s proposal.

Williams is a versatile forward as he is a left-winger by traits but is also comfortable on the right. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to finish off his chances and is also efficient in creating opportunities for fellow attackers.

Arsenal have Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli at their disposal for the left side of the attack. But, the duo haven’t been consistent enough thus far this season.

Therefore, upgrading this position would be the right decision and Williams would be a great coup if the North London club eventually manage to secure his service.
