Arsenal receive huge boost to sign Aston Villa star Watkins
Arsenal have received a huge boost in pursuit of Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, as per transfer expert Mike Brown.
Following Gabriel Jesus’ serious knee issue, the Gunners attempted to sign the 29-year-old to replace the Brazilian in the recently concluded winter window.
They launched a formal £60m offer to seal the deal but the Villans turned down the proposal as they didn’t want to let their star man leave in mid-season.
After failing to secure his service, the North London club didn’t hire anyone else before the deadline to strengthen the centre-forward position. However, it has been reported that they are still interested in signing a new striker and could look to hire one next summer.
Reporting on Football Insider, Brown says that Watkins is ready to move to the Emirates Stadium as he is an Arsenal fan. Moreover, he states that although Aston Villa have been enjoying a stellar time under Unai Emery’s guidance, the Gunners would be a step up as they have been challenging for the Premier League title.
Watkins to Arsenal
Therefore, the striker would be tempted to leave the Villans should Arsenal revive their interest in signing him in the upcoming summer window. Brown said:
“Watkins is an Arsenal fan, isn’t he. From what I hear, he’d be open to making that move in the summer. As good as Villa have been, and I mean no disrespect because they’ve been fantastic and they deserve their success, a move to Arsenal is still a step up.
“He’d be challenging for league titles and potentially as the first-choice striker in that team. So the short answer is yes, I think if Arsenal come back in for him in the summer that’s a move he’d be willing to make.”
Watkins has proven his worth in the Premier League over the last few years and Mikel Arteta needs a goal-scorer like the Englishman at his disposal to finally guide Arsenal to win the Premier League title.
Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club revive their interest in signing Watkins to bolster the attack in the upcoming transfer window.
