Arsenal are reportedly planning to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Under Mikel Arteta’s guidance, the Gunners have established themselves as one of the Premier League’s title contenders. However, they have been struggling to take the next step and finally win the league.

They came very close to overcoming the two decades of title drought in the last two seasons but Manchester City eventually managed to beat them in the race.

Now, Liverpool are the favourite to lift the league this term. It has widely been suggested that the North London club need to sign a new prolific goal-scorer to win the Premier League title.

Fichajes state that Arsenal want to bolster the frontline and after exploring several options, they have earmarked Gyokeres as a serious target with Mikel Arteta the main driving force to purchase him.

Gyokeres to Arsenal

The player has a £83m release clause in his current contract but Sporting have decided to lower their valuation and are now ready to cash-in on him for a fee of around £50m.

However, purchasing him won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as Manchester United and Barcelona are also keen on luring him away from the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

The Red Devils have recently appointed Ruben Amorim as the new head coach and under his guidance, the Swedish international flourished his career at Sporting.

So, the player might be tempted to reunite with his former boss, therefore, Arsenal will have to put their best efforts in to persuade him to join the club.

Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the world in recent times as he scored 43 goals and registered 15 assists in all competitions last season. Moreover, he helped the Lions win the Liga Portugal title.

Now, the striker has continued to showcase his goal-scoring prowess this season, making 41 goal contributions in all competitions.

Therefore, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him and the North Londoners will be hoping that the striker will be able to replicate the same performance in the Premier League if he were to join.

However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club eventually secure his service to reinforce the attacking department.
